MSW Veterans Scholarship

According to SAMHSA (2018), roughly 50% of post 9/11 service members who need treatment for mental health conditions seek it, and only 50% of those veterans receive adequate care.  Not only is there a need for social workers (currently there is a national shortage of qualified medical and mental health professionals) but there is an even greater need for those who have a specialization in working with PTSD specifically with individuals who have been exposed to combat/war/etc. Veterans, especially those who have served in combat,  prefer to talk with therapists who have also served in the military.

The School of Social Work at Michigan State University is actively looking at how to address this need by creating a Combat Veterans certificate for Masters of Social Work and recruiting veterans into our MSW program. However, most veterans use their GI Bill to fund their undergraduate degree, leaving them with little financial assistance if they wish to continue in a graduate program.

This scholarship is only for veterans who wish to earn an MSW in order to better serve other veterans and completing the Combat Veterans Certificate is required.

Give to the College of Social Science/School of Social Work and help veterans who wish to earn an MSW in order to better serve other veterans.

By supporting the MSW Veterans Scholarship during Give Green Day you will help alleviate the burden that our military veteran MSW students take on when going to graduate school.  This award will help them with tuition and fees, purchase of books and supplies needed for class, and living expenses.

About the video (play above)

Research shows when veterans help other veterans deal with trauma, it is more effective and can even help prevent suicides. Michigan State University’s School of Social Work Alumnus, Kevin Thompson LMSW, USMC, knows this first hand. See how he and his wife, Tina, who works at MSU, are making a real difference in the lives of others. You can help veterans like Kevin help countless other veterans with your support of the MSW Veterans scholarship. As part of the scholarship, recipients will be required to complete the Combat Veterans Certificate program, the first and only program of its kind in the nation.
